Mt. Hood is a beautiful, distinctively pointed peak in the state of Oregon. It’s not unusually tall, at just over 11,000 feet, but it is the tallest peak in the state.
Goldendale, Washington is an especially good location for viewing Mt. Hood. The open farm land and rolling hills make excellent vantage spots, and the Columbia River running through The Columbia Gorge can be a wonderful foreground subject from the right locations. Hop in a car and scout the area and you may find a spot where you can also see Mt. Adams and the tip of Mt. St. Helens peeking over the hills for the trifecta.
This picture was taken from a field west and north of Goldendale, on Christmas eve, when there was just enough smoke and haze in the air to lend this golden brown tint. It can be challenging to capture the sun without losing details in the rest of the scene, because the sun, though low in the sky and filtered by clouds & haze, still overpowers the scene. Since I wasn’t trying to capture detail so much as the lighting, color and silhouette of the mountain, everything came together nicely.
I love the rich, yellow-brown hues and the haze draped over the base of the mountain. The cloud trails add interesting but not distracting texture to the sky, and the diffusion of the sun throughout the picture produces the scene’s warmth.
This picture would look wonderful on your wall wouldn't it?
